The Creation Concept

A table showing how cosmology, geographic changes, and nature, are featured in various prophecies.

Things that are said about the natural environment show that prophecy must be understood as figurative, rather than literal.

Hills will melt

"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt."
Amos 9:13 Mountains and hills melting describes a change from the solid to liquid state, as when snow is melted. Prophecies about hills and mountains melting describe literal interpretations of the mountains and hills of prophecy being replaced by figurative ones. When the symbolic meaning of the promised land is understood, it is as if the mountains and hills change to another state, and are melted.
Mountains melted, Sinai melted

"The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai"
Judges 5:5 The law, represented by Sinai, has lost its power over those who are in Christ. [Romans 6:14, Galatians 4:25]
Mountains flow down

"Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence."
Isaiah 64:1-3
Isaiah described the mountains flowing down as if they turn into a liquid. This is viewed as a good thing, and he longed for it to happen. It is explained as the things said about mountains in the prophecies of scripture being understood in a figurative way. Other translations say the mountains "quake." In these prophecies the mountains are metaphors representing great spiritual promises of God.
Mountains are molten due to God's presence

"For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth.
And the mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as the waters that are poured down a steep place."
Micah 1:3-4
Micah showed that the mountains becoming molten is due to the presence of God. It is a metaphor that depicts viewing the mountains of prophecy in a different, non-literal way.
Mountains will drop wine

"the mountains shall drop down new wine,"
Joel 3:18
Amos 9:13
Wine is associated with a joyful feast; the feast is a spiritual one, understanding the scriptures, and the prophecies, and promises that have remained hidden.
Hills will flow with milk
Joel 3:18 Hills and milk both represent basic teachings of scripture. "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:" [1 Peter 2:2]
Mountains will sing

"The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing"
Isaiah 44:23
Isaiah 55:12
The message of prophecy is pleasant, and harmonious; the gospel is good news for the church. Promises to the church are represented by mountains. Peter said they are "exceeding great and precious." [2 Peter 1:4]
Every mountain will be made low

"Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it."
Isaiah 40:4 The idea of mountains being made low, and valleys being filled, would follow naturally if they were to melt. Isaiah's prophecy means that mysteries about the interpretation of the scriptures will be solved.
Mountains skipped like rams

"What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?
Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; and ye little hills, like lambs?"
Psalm 114:5-6

The 12 tribes of Israel are the mountains, that "skipped" out of Egypt, to the promised land. In the NT, Jerusalem is raised up to heaven, and the saints are seated in "heavenly places." [Ephesians 2:6, Hebrews 12:22]
Mountains will shoot forth branches and bear fruit:

"But ye, O mountains of Israel, ye shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel"
Ezekiel 36:8
Mountains are symbols of the revelations of God which become productive as places for vineyards and fruit trees, representing abundant spiritual nourishment for God's people. Words of scripture that were mysterious will be understood.
Jerusalem, Zion to be raised up:

"the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it."
Isaiah 2:2
The NT puts Jerusalem in heaven. [Hebrews 12:22]
Mountains and islands are moved out of their places.

"every mountain and island were moved out of their places."
Revelation 6:14
Mountains and islands represent prophecies, and promises of God in scripture. Being moved out of their places means that they are misinterpreted; the prophecies have been applied to the wrong people, and in the wrong time, and the wrong places.
The Mount of Olives is cleaved in the midst.

"And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south."
Zechariah 14:4
The two halves of the Mount of Olives represent two opposite interpretations of the Olivet Discourse, preterism and dispensationalism. Zechariah says to flee, after the event occurs, through the wide valley between the two sections of the mountain. This means apply the prophecy to the present age, rather than the first century, or a future seven year tribulation.
God guides his people

"They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them."
Isaiah 49:10 Revelation 7:15-17 alludes to this.

Mountains are to be a way

"And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted."
Isaiah 49:11
The teachings of Jesus in the sermon on the mount are a way of life.
The land will be turned to a plain.

"All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up"
Zechariah 14:10 The hills and valleys becoming a plain suggests mysteries of scripture will be explained, and all of it will be understood.
Valleys are to be lifted up

"Let every valley be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
And let the rough ground become a plain,
And the rugged terrain a broad valley"
Isaiah 40:4 (NASB)
If the land represents revelations of God, the valleys, which are places where earth has been removed, may represent things unknown, or things yet to be revealed. The valleys becoming filled represents the missing revelations being supplied.
Natures of animals are to change

"And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together:"
Isaiah 11:7 Animals may represent nations, or people. The natures of fierce and warlike humans will be changed.
Lions to eat straw

"the lion shall eat straw like the ox."
Isaiah 11:7
Isaiah 65:25
Strong men, or nations, will be humbled.
Deadly snakes become harmless to children

"And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den."
Isaiah 11:8 Jesus called the religious leaders who opposed his teaching serpents. The false doctrines will become harmless, when the truth is understood.
Horses, mules, asses, and camels are struck by a plague, during an assault on Jerusalem.

"Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. ... And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague."
Zechariah 14:12,15
The plague affects the eyes and the tongue, and is spiritual. The eyes being affected represents spiritual blindness. The tongue represents speech; their words are nonsense. Horses represent those who have no understanding. [Psalm 32:9]
Trees clap hands

"all the trees of the field shall clap their hands."
Isaiah 55:12 Trees may represent the righteous, who appreciate and applaud God's works.
The desolate land will be tilled, and will become like Eden

"And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by. And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden;"
Ezekiel 36:34-35
When the scriptures are understood, they give life, and bring forth fruit, leading to man's reconciliation to God.
The wilderness to be a fruitful field

"Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest."
Isaiah 32:15
The land, representing the scriptures, becomes fruitful, when "the spirit is poured upon us from on high."
Floods on dry ground

"For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:"
Isaiah 44:3
The Spirit is compared to water, which is poured on the earth and causes the plants to grow.
The desert will blossom as the rose

"And the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose."
Isaiah 35:1 The barren land represents the scriptures, which when watered by the Spirit, becomes fruitful.
Rivers to flow from Jerusalem

"And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be."
Zechariah 14:8
The gospel, and the knowledge of God, flows from the church to the world.
A river turns salt waters fresh

"Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed."
Ezekiel 47:8
The salt sea represents people of the world. [Isaiah 57:20, Revelation 17:15]
The river abounds with fish of all kinds

"they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many."
Ezekiel 47:10 In the NT, fish represent potential believers. The apostles were called "fishers of men." [Mark 1:17]
A valley east of the Jordan will be watered

"a fountain shall come forth out of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim."
Joel 3:18 The valley of Shittim was where the Israelites committed whoredom; the river causes people to cease from spiritual whoredom and turn to God. [Numbers 25:1]
The rivers of Judah to flow with water

"all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters"
Joel 3:18 Rivers in a wilderness flow after rainfall, and the rain represents the Spirit of God, which gives spiritual knowledge and understanding, which flows like streams over a land that was dry and barren.
Trees will grow in desert

I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together:
Isaiah 41:19 Trees represent the righteous; the desert represents the revelations of God that were previously like a wilderness, becoming productive. [Psalm 1:3; 92:12]
The day of the LORD is a cloudy day

"For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen."
Ezekiel 30:3 It is cloudy, because of false teachers, "clouds that are carried with a tempest." [2 Peter 2:17]
God will seek his sheep who are scattered
Ezekiel 34:12 Christians are scattered in tens of thousands of denominations. [Daniel 12:7]
Stars withdraw their shining
Joel 2:10
Joel 3:15
The saints become hard to distinguish from the world.
The sun becomes dark, and the moon turns to blood

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.
Joel 2:31
Acts 2:20
After the apostles died, the gospel was distorted by false doctrines.

The moon turning to blood may represent an aversion to the law and things Jewish.
Some of the stars are cast to the earth

"And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth:"
Revelation 12:4 Stars cast to the earth represent Christians who abandon their faith, and return to the world.
The heavens roll together like a scroll

"and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll"
Isaiah 34:4

This was fulfilled by the scientific revolution, when the heavens ceased their supposed revolutions (in men's minds) and diurnal rotation was assigned to the earth rather than heaven.
"Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father" Matthew 13:43 When the tares of false interpretations are removed, the saints and the message of the gospel will shine like the sun.
The day to be neither light nor dark, but turns to light at evening
"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light."
Zechariah 14:6-7
This probably represents spiritual truth being obscured, but the truth of the gospel becoming clear near the end of the age.
The earth swallows up the flood from the serpent's mouth

"And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth."
Revelation 12:15-16
When the promised land is understood as a metaphor, which represents the spiritual things promised to the saints, the flood of flawed literal interpretations is swallowed up.
